How To Care For Your Skin Type?

Matching your skin care to your skin type is essential to achieving the best results for your skin. If you are unsure of the different skin types and which one you might have, head over here to find out more. Once you have identified your particular skin type, below are some tips for you to take better care of your skin.

NORMAL SKIN

How to take care of it?

  • Regular cleansing and moisturizing will keep your skin healthy and hydrated, while application of sunscreen is essential in protecting your skin from environmental damage
  • Keep your routine as simple as possible and focus on maintaining the balance of you skin by opting for lighter lotions and serums
  • Check the state of your skin condition regularly and select products according to its needs
  • Avoid products that contain irritants such as fragrances, parabens, surfactants (i.e. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and preservatives like Methylchloroisothiazolinone (MCI) and Methylisothiazolinone (MIT/MI)

Having normal skin does have it perks but the inevitability of aging, cumulative damage from unprotected sun exposure, environmental effects and life changes will eventually take a toll on your skin. Taking care of it well will play a major role in keeping your skin in its best condition as the years roll by.

Recommended products for normal skin:

DRY SKIN

How to take care of it?

  • Apply moisturizers at least 2-3 times daily, especially after bathing, to keep your skin soft and hydrated
  • Be gentle when cleansing and pat your skin gently after wash
  • Stay hydrated by drinking lots of water
  • Use humidifiers in low-humidity environments to retain your skin’s natural moisture
  • Avoid protracted bathing, particularly in hot or chlorinated water and use warm water instead
  • Abstain from using harsh foaming detergents which remove hydrating lipids and NMFs from the skin
  • Avoid drying alcohols, astringents and irritants such as fragrance and silicone

 Choose:

  • Antioxidants (i.e. vitamins C and E, green tea and coenzyme Q10)
    • Protects skin against premature aging effects of free radicals
    • Act as anti-inflammatory agents to help reduce and soothe the symptoms of dry skin such as inflammation, redness and itching
  • Ceramides
    • Help to protect the skin barrier and attracts moisture to it
  • Glycerin & urea
    • Helps to attract moisture into the skin and has a softening and soothing effect on the skin
  • Glycolic acid
    • Exfoliates and attracts moisture to the skin
    • Presence of small molecular structure allows it to dissolve the dry skin cells of the surface of the skin, encouraging a stronger, protective barrier
  • Hyaluronic acid
    • Offers immediate hydration due to its ability to hold up to a thousand times its weight in water
    • Contains great anti-aging properties

Recommended products for dry skin:

OILY SKIN

How to take care of it?

  • Avoid washing your face too many times a day- recommended to wash no more than twice a day
  • Lightly exfoliate your face 2-3 times a week to help remove dead skin cells that may be trapped in the pores
  • Choose a gentle foaming face wash to prevent skin irritation which can lead to increased oil production

Avoid products containing:

  • Occlusives like petroleum jelly
    • Occlusives create a thick barrier on the skin to prevent moisture loss through evaporation, but they may feel too heavy or sticky on oily skin
  • Oils with high oleic acid content (i.e. Coconut oil, hazelnut oil, sunflower oil, camellia oil)
    • Oleic acid is a fatty acid that makes a heavy oil that coats the skin when present in high amounts
    • Highly comedogenic and tend to clog pores
  • Alcohol-based products
    • Causes skin to be dry and irritated
    • Enlarge pores and increases tendency of causing breakouts
  • Sodium lauryl or laureth sulphate (SLS)
    • Tends to irritate skin and strips skin of natural oils
  • Drying ingredients like Benzoyl Peroxide
    • It is a harsh oxidant that can strip the skin of its natural moisture levels, triggering your skin to work harder at producing more oil to compensate for a drier skin

Choose:

  • Products with the word “noncomedogenic”
  • Oils high in linoleic, linoleic, or alpha-linolenic acid (which are often lacking in oily skin types)
    • Examples: Rosehip, Evening Primrose, Hemp seed, Grapeseed
  • Salicylic acid
    • Natural exfoliant that removes dead skin cells which may otherwise cause pore blockages
  • Vitamin A (i.e. Retinol)
    • Balance skin hydration levels
    • Mild exfoliating effects help to remove dead skin cells that may lead to moisture loss
    • Regulate excess sebum production and help with breakouts
  • Hyaluronic acid
    • Intensely hydrating yet lightweight
  • Niacinamide
    • Absorbs sebum
    • Bolsters the skin barrier and stimulates natural production of collagen
    • Strengthens outer skin layer and increases surface renewal rate

Recommended products for oily skin:

COMBINATION SKIN

How to take care of it?

  • Consider using different products for different areas of the face
  • Adopt multi-masking
  • Avoid harsh or irritating ingredients such as fragrances and natural oils, as well as rich and comedogenic cosmetics that will clog pores

Choose:

  • Skin repairing ingredients like ceramides and fatty acids
  • Cell stimulating ingredients such as Alphahydroxy acids (AHA) and Betahydroxy acids (BHA)
  • Antioxidants like Vitamin C
    • Promotes collagen growth while brightening skin tone
    • Most multipurpose skin care ingredient
  • Hyaluronic acid & aloe vera
    • Draws moisture into skin for hydration without adding oil
    • Helps skin retain elasticity

Recommended products for combination skin:
