Different Types of Cleansers for your Skin Type

Following what we have discussed in the previous blog, the first step to every skincare routine is cleansing. It is important to remove all makeup and impurities built up throughout the day in order to let your skin breathe, repair and renew itself. (Especially after all your halloween makeups!) However, with the plethora of cleansing options available, each with its own stated benefits, finding the perfect cleanser may prove harder than expected.

Understanding the different types of cleansers available in the market and their respective properties can help you make a more targeted decision, based on your specific skin type and condition. Focusing on the 5 most common types of cleansers, let’s take a look at which of them are most suitable for your skin!

1. Micellar cleansers

Micellar cleansers provide the lightest forms of facial cleansing. It features “micelles” which are tiny oil molecules suspended in soft water and attracts oil, dirt and makeup. They are usually applied with cotton pads and do not need rinsing. As they are generally of milder formulation, they may not be as effective as other forms of cleansers and hence should be used together with another form of cleanser.

Suitable for normal, oily, dry and combination skin types.

2. Gel cleansers

Gel cleansers are clear and have a jelly-like consistency. They are lightweight and offer deep cleansing, unclogging your pores and removing excess oil while providing moisture to your skin. Its antiseptic qualities also help to kill acne-causing bacteria, proving to be more effective for acne-prone skin. Unlike micellar water, gel cleansers have to be rinsed off.

3. Foam cleansers

Foam cleansers are usually gel or cream in nature but turn into a foam-like consistency when combined with water. They are lightweight and deeply cleansing as the foam produced helps to clear out pores and remove dirt and makeup. Foam cleansers tend to be more drying in nature as the foaming effect is produced by the presence of Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) which is a common skin-drying irritant that may not be suitable for individuals with sensitive skin.

4. Oil cleansers

Cleansing oils are often used to remove makeup and leaves the skin feeling soft and supple. As they do not provide deep cleansing, they usually act as pre-cleansers and are the first step in a double cleansing routine. The blend of oils present in the cleansers work as solvents due to their lipophilic function, where they are naturally attracted to other oils. This allows the cleansing oil to quickly dissolve excess sebum and makeup on your skin while softening it. With minimal to no surfactants, these cleansers can prove to be less irritating and more hydrating than traditional surfactant-based cleansers.

5. Cream/ lotion cleansers

Cream cleansers are usually thick and creamy with a slightly heavier consistency. They have a silky texture and are often deeply moisturizing, making them preferable for dry skin. However, cream cleansers tend to leave residue that can cause clogging of pores which may not be suitable for individuals with oily skin.
